Notes: Occasionally there is confusion regarding the difference between manufacturing year, and model year. The FAA only records the year of manufacture, while Cessna follows a policy similar to automobile manufacturers, using the model year designation. For example, Cessna began manufacturing C150's with slanted vertical stabilizers for the 1966 150F model. However, these airplanes began coming off the assembly line in the fall of 1965, so a portion of the 1966 150F's are recorded by the FAA as 1965 Cessna 150's. Since we don't know precisely which 150F's were manufactured in 1965 and which were manufactured in 1966, (nor which 150G's were manufactured in 1966 and so forth) It simply makes sense to follow Cessna's policy of using the model designation, and ignore the year of manufacture. IF IN DOUBT, ALWAYS REFER TO THE SERIAL NUMBER FOR CONFIRMATION. Before using the reference below, keep a few of things in mind, as Cessna was not entirely logical about it's serial numbering policies. The first production Cessna 150 was ser# 17001 and they stuck with this format until the 999 th 150. Then for reasons not fully understood, the next available five digit serial sequence was substituted partway through the 1960 model year. This happened to be ser# 59001. Only the last 18 of the 1960 models were given this orphaned 590XX serial designation. Starting with the 1961 model Cessna decided to add a “150” prefix to the C150 serial numbers. Unfortunately, they neglected to add a dash after the model number. Some American made C150's and C152's were mistakenly registered with the FAA using dash in the serial number, but for the record, Cessna never used dashes in the serial numbers of US built C150's or C152's. This gets even more complicated because Cessna did use a dash in the serial number for C150's built by Reims in France, but only through 1969, after which the dash was replaced by an extra zero.
