I did read about the hat in question being offered on eBay, with the proceeds going to charity, so it's apparently a legitimate auction.

As to the hat's future value...it won't be but a short time that if you mention the now famous pilot's name, most people will likely ask, with a puzzled look, "Who?".

Although this kind of fame is fleeting and will likely fade to black virtually overnight, the incredible feat of airmanship performed by the good Captain will not be forgotten by the people who owe their lives to him, and it seems to me that would be far more rewarding than the fame.
