For the pre-buy I would have a full annual inspection done on the aircraft. I tell the seller that I will put down the agreed upon asking price, and anything that is found during the pre-buy/annual inspection comes off the asking price of the airplane.
I absolutely agree that this is the way to go. I would add and important emphasis though. No seller in his right mind would agree to open endly "pay for anything that is found wrong" in an annual/prebuy, because an awful lot can be found if one digs deep enough (and usually is). There are all sorts of things that are "wrong" that don't affect the legal airworthiness of the airplane.

A more appropriate agreement is that the seller will pay for anything that is found that causes the aircraft to "fail" the annual, or in other words, causes the aircraft to be "Unairworthy".

There's still room for controversy here, with things like low compressions etc, that may not technically cause the airplane to fail the annual, but are still of concern, but this is a reasonable starting point that any honest seller ought to be able to agree to.

Thanks for the clarification Royson, that is what I meant. Very good point.

Good advice. Thanks, I'll certainly try to work this approach into any offers made.

An update on the south of Ft. Worth aircraft. Dale and I went to take a look at it on Sunday, Jan 30. The airplane, despite some good points, did not meet my expectations, so I remain more knowledgeable than before, but "still lookin."

Special thanks to Dale for giving me his Sunday to look at an airplane on a wet and cool day. I learned a great deal and had a good time. The club's informal buyer mentoring is a real contribution to potential owners. I feel fortunate to have been able to have this assistance.

Best wishes and thanks to all who contributed advice.

A VERY nice 1973 C-150L just went up for sale at Limington.

The owner just bought a 172 and also has a Husky on Anphibs so he doesn't have time for the 150, but it is a beauty. Check the specks

2400 hr TT (nope not a misprint)Never a trainer
100 hrs since Major on engine
He rates it an 8 inside and out.
KX 170B - 2 VORs - Transponder, Mode C
New: Windshield, Door Panels, Door Posts, Center Console, Tanis Heater.

Asking $20,500 O.B.R.O.

The owner is a great guy. Let me know if you are interested and I'll send you his contact info. He has some pics he can send as well. I'll try to get them from him and post them on the club page.

Andrew

Yes, please send contact info. Limington is aways from Okieland, but it sounds like a very nice airplane. Thanks.

Sounds like a wonderful cross country and a chance to get to know a new plane. You could have some lobster, sightsee the Northeast, fly the VFR corridor down the Hudson River past Manhattan, and see a Broadway play before turning Southwest. Pick up the Ohio river in Eastern Ohio and follow it to the Mississippi. Stop at Branson for the night, next day you're home.

Sounds like you've followed this route -- at least the north south portion. I agree, it would be a great start with a new airplane. Although, the thought of flying through or around those larger metro areas does give me pause.

I know a fellow who wouldn't need much convincing to fly this airplane home for you.

His name rhymes with "Steve Mayotte" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
