Thanks everyone - ordered Marv's Lightspeed units cuz I can return them in 30 days if I don't like 'em, and the price fit our budget. If they are what we want we will buy another one in the fall.

And for the record - the one I bought is for the wife on this trip - hope it helps, cuz the one she has just plain hurts after an hour....

And Dan - thanks to you and GPB both, but no matter what Gary says I ain't kissin' him!

Robbie,

Kind of hard to beat these ANR headsets [marvgolden.com] for the money. Justina likes hers. They are the Lightspeed QFR's under Golden Eagle's name.

I bought a Lightspeed ANR headset last week. I spent about 2 hours with it on Saturday. It was very comfortable, and GENERALLY, did a good job.

However, about half the time I was getting a really annoying, really above annoying, noise in the right ear. It was kind of like spits of interference. It was definitely from the ANR circuitry because the volume control had no affect. Maybe I got a faulty unit.

Anyway, I took it back on Monday and exchanged for passive DC's.

I will report on the DC headset as soon as this stinko weather clears up.

Too bad Reg, it's rare to run into that kind of problem, especially with a LS product. Like Jeff Davis says (from all I've heard) the Lightspeed QFRs are really great passive headsets and I've given some thought to buying the deluxe model for Jo Ann, as she doesn't fly all that often and would find them much more comfortable than the heavy Telex ANR she uses now. Noise seems to bother her a lot less than it does me, so I think she'd be pretty happy with the passive unit. IMHO Birdie...and maybe 150/150s in general...are just damned noisey!

My experience might have been with a faulty unit, which Lightspeed would probably have fixed, they are great folks. And the QFR's are VERY comfortable. It almost sounded like there was some particular frequency generated by my airplane that the electronics couldn't quite figure out.

The newer DC's are really comfortable, too. I didn't like earlier DC's, they seemed to clamp too hard. But the newer ones are really comfy, and I just didn't want to mess with a bunch of warranty stuff.

I might also add a plug for buying locally. I intended to buy my new headset on the internet and save a few bucks. But I had a commitment to give someone a ride and the "spare" headset was with my partner on his ultralight. So I hit a local FBO. These folks were very helpful. I feel it was worth the extra few bucks for their insights and their flexibility.

Does anyone have a used (non working) head set they would like to get rid off (cheap). I need a good, confortable for a full day, ear protection. No communication required.

Peltor makes some great inexpensive units that fit the requirement. We had one for the kid before we got him a "real" headset.

Finally got breaks in the weather and my schedule that coincided.

I am in love with my new DC passive headset!!! The noise reduction is quite acceptable. The big deal is that these things are so light that you can hardly tell you have them on!!

My set has the newer style headband and ear cups. Older DC's (I used them a lot in my buddy's 185) seemed to clamp my head to hard. This new style is pretty incredible. I also really like the sound quality and the way they have mounted the mic. Well worth the $313 pluss tax at my local FBO.
