They were the O-2 in Vietnam.

GPB wont have to deal with all those gear doors, it's a 336.

It just wouldn't make a very good fartabout plane... unless buddy Bill here wants to let go of Mr. Ed for an unbelievably low price to somebody who needs the power for short runways (hint, hint)

It's not the greatest cross country airplane. It's not very fast, and it really really really needs all 93 gallons. It's not a good fartabout plane, either. It's purpose built - to haul stuff from rough fields. It does alright for short fields.

It's still a maintenance hog.

Other than than, it IS a nice flying airplane.

Yep! Kinda my thoughts. I especially like the center line thrust. So, when this opportunity came about where I can get my hands on a Skymaster for $40,000. 600 hours on each engine. It definitely peeked my interest enough to do some further research. Though, my head is rapidly coming out of the clouds and back down to earth.

I seem to remember Cessna ads in the 60's calling it 'Everyman's P-38' because of the twin boom design.

The performance of the first models was poor but I always thought they looked cool.

It also seems that most of the safety issues concerned inattention by the pilot and poor run-ups. The rear engine had a tendency to vapor lock during taxi on hot days and pilots were known to take off on one engine. Pilots I've known who have flown them a lot apply power to the rear engine first as a fool-proof method of determining full power on the out-of-sight-out-of-mind engine.

Metal tanks like a 150. One inboard of the boom and two outboard. Total of six tanks (in the 337 I worked on, I think they were all similar) Opening up to work on the tanks, required supports for the wing.

Hee hee! OK! I am getting the message. Maybe that is why he is asking only $40,000, eh?

Thanks everybody!

Bill, I thought you were looking for cheaper options (leaving maintenance issues aside). shocked

From reading this, I guess you are just as human as the rest of us. wink
