If you are looking for an inexpensive four place airplane it would be tough to beat this deal! [barnstormers.com] If it is in any shape at all!

You sure would want to do a thorough pre-buy at that price. Fabric? Corrosion?

But if its clean, that is a very capable airplane cheap.

Then convert it to a Pacer!!!

On the face of it that DOES look like a deal! Unless the fabric is bad or there's some other big problem.

These aircraft have steel tube fuselage frames and corrosion is very common, but, I understand, not all that hard to fix, except it may mean re-doing the fabric on the fuselage.

Hmmm...Except, well.. is isn't really a "4 place aircraft" in the real sense of the word. In fact would say three medium adults or maybe to medium addults and two small children tops.

If it were a 150hp or better still a 160hp, when then I might think about 4 adults as such

Cheers

Oh, I dunno Matt. I remember one time of a Tripacer with four adults and a kid in the baggage compartment. (Guess which one I was? wink )

I thought we already talked about these Pacers? Remember, freinds do not let friends fly Pacers. AKA "lawn dart".

I know some folks love them but I can't tell you how many of them are stacked up out in the boonies around here. It's like so many planes, keep them light and you'll be fine. Fill the back seats and watch out. It turns into a whole different animal.

There are those that fly and those that wish they could.

LOL Mike. I don't think I know of any other airplane that leads such a polarized love/hate existence.

Pacers and Tri-Pacers are cool birds. Howeever, I do recall that the engine upgrade to 150-160 hp was a necessary task as the performance was found to be lacking in practice. That short, high lift, high-drag Clark Y wing needed another 2 to 3 feet each side. It was just a tad too short. Glide like a rock. The Shortwing Pipers are LEGENDARY about that.

Still, they are pretty neat birds. Simple and easy to fly. They had interconnected bungee cords with the ailerons and rudder. And the rudder did have a lot of authority. An inherited characteristic from it's older brother the Cub. A Tri-Pacer was the airplane I had my first ride in, and a Colt was my first formal flight lesson. I'll never forget the overhead trim and the Johnson bar flaps!

Cool airplanes! If I had another 11 bills laying around... smile

Bill, don't get me wrong, I actually love Colts, Pacers and Tripacers, I like there look and generally they perform well, except when you try to load up 135hp version with a bunch of weight.

I seriously looked into buying a 135hp Pacer around 6-7 years ago but the performance loaded was a deal breaker for me in the end. In 1994 I looked a Colt (it had a single back seat too) but as it turned out, it had a bent frame that I pick up when doing some measurements around the tailfeathers and drag wires

A few years prior to that - 1986/7, I actually bought a Basket Case to do a fix up, unfortunately time was against me and I onsold it to a friend of mine who actually did to the rebuilt and transformed it to a Pacer...it was a 160hp and flew great...every time I look on Barnstormers I always check out those planes to see whats around and how much people want for them in their various states of wellbeing..

Cool planes indeed, and I would have no hesitation in picking up a good 160hp if the "time and price" were right

Cheers
