It will be something I can work on without the BS and still fly without a medical. Open to suggestions.

Vans RV-12 [vansaircraft.com]. Looks like most people are taking about two years to build them.

Once you have built the plane, you will know everything about it. Take the LSA Repairman course (16 hours) and you can do all the maintenance yourself. Plus, it can run mogas to save even more money.

The RV-12 looks like a very nice airplane. But, be cautious Dale. The RV-12 is classified as S-LSA. Meaning that you must build it exactly to manufacturers specifications. No deviation without manufacturer approval. It must be maintained specifically to manufacturers instruction. And replacement parts must be manufacturer approved. No substitution nor deviation without the manufacturer's oky doky. If you are satisfied to live within these restrictions, being an RV, it has little choice but to be a great airplane.

You're half correct. It has to be built exactly per manufacturer specs. However, once it has been certified, you can modify it anyway you want. Read the posts in the RV-12 VAF Forum [vansairforce.com] about all the mods people have made or plan to make to their RV-12s.

P.S. S-LSAs (Special LSAs) are aircraft built by the manufacturers. The ones built by amateur builders (based on the S-LSAs) are called E-LSA (Experimental LSAs).
