I have the Verizon 1GB plan and come pretty close each month. I purposely don't download YouTube or other video while on cell data. (And on any 4G network you could sure get to 1MB quick) Also...a lot of GA airports I've been to are not in the most populated of areas. I feel better with the better coverage. Disclaimer: I work for Verizon (not the cellular side of the house) and think they rock where the network is concerned. So my opinion is biased, but Consumer Reports agrees with me I know each option...(more memory and cellular enabled) adds to the cost now, but trust me you won't regret it!

Also I have WiFi at my house and free WiFi is available at the airport.
I plan to adapt the iPad to my existing PC mount that I have on my yoke.
You are not required to get a data plan with the 3G version. The 3G version gives you a built-in GPS, in addition to the 3G capability. They usually cost about $139 more than the WiFi only model, so not much more than buying an external GPS and you then have the option to turn on data in case you need it in a pinch. The built-in GPS has worked very well for me. I got my 3G iPad strictly for the GPS. However I made the mistake of trying out the data plan one month and could not turn it off afterwards. It is just too convenient for me. Where I live, and for traveling internationally, I find AT&T better because they use thee GSM system. I also have my phone with AT&T because I can use date and phone simultaneously. Coverage where I live is just as good as Verizon. You'll have time to decide how much data you'll need. You can easily change plans from one month to the next. Merry Christmas, Amy!

I feel better with the better coverage. I'm going to have to agree with Sandy here. My iPhone is on AT&T and my iPad is on Verizon. There have been many times when I have signal from Verizon but not with AT&T. Most often that happens to be at an airport, since they are generally on the edge of town and not close to the population centers where the cell towers are usually located. I have the smallest data plan, and it seems to work fine for me. The iPad data plans work differently than the normal cell phone plans do. It is basically month-to-month, no year (or more) commitments. You can turn it on when you need it and off when you don't (although you will probably end up leaving it on all the time). Probably mounting location. I had a pretty good GPS signal from the back seat last month. I went on to FlightAware before the flight and entered the assigned flight plan into my iPad. Then I could watch all the changes to the flight plan in real time.
