Pacers and Tri-Pacers are cool birds. Howeever, I do recall that the engine upgrade to 150-160 hp was a necessary task as the performance was found to be lacking in practice. That short, high lift, high-drag Clark Y wing needed another 2 to 3 feet each side. It was just a tad too short. Glide like a rock. The Shortwing Pipers are LEGENDARY about that.
Still, they are pretty neat birds. Simple and easy to fly. They had interconnected bungee cords with the ailerons and rudder. And the rudder did have a lot of authority. An inherited characteristic from it's older brother the Cub. A Tri-Pacer was the airplane I had my first ride in, and a Colt was my first formal flight lesson. I'll never forget the overhead trim and the Johnson bar flaps!
Cool airplanes! If I had another 11 bills laying around...
