All excellent questions!

Some people crate, some people fly! Personally I'd prefer it flown, less of a chance for damage.

The way to get the range out of the plane is to install a temporary ferry tank! Not too much in the way of modification, just tap into the fuel line.

About the airplane being in excellent shape - ALL airplanes should be in excellent shape, and I'm not talking about how they look.

And I trained in Piper Traumahawks. Excellent plane to train in, miserable on cross countries. I don't want to get in another one again!
