Wow - according to the Illustrated Parts Catalog, there are seven different styles of wheel pants! Some may interchange on the backing plates, while others will not.

I'll eventually put together a FAQ with all of the serial- and part-number details, but for now here are all the pictures and years they were used:

1959 - 1962

1963 - 1965

1966 - 1968

1969 - 1970

1971 - 1973

1974

1975 - 1977

Note: It would appear that the 1974 is identical with the 1975-1977 (and most likely is a bolt-on replacement), but according to the IPC they're two different part numbers.

HMMMMMMMM? Curious...........I started asking how long ago about interchangability of wheel pants and there apparently was no interest? Then Brian, I, others, did begin a discussion and have been playing with this now for how long? And now, after we have figured out what will fit what?

Curious.................

Excellent, Kirk!

Between you and Bill, I think you two have covered all of the bases!

This information should be combined into a FAQ!

Now, here I am trying to decide if I want to install the "old" style wheel pants in which I am in the process of refinishing. Or trading them off for a set of "new" style pants? So here I am going through the pictures on the Club website comparing various aircraft with various pants. When the light bulb flashed in a dazzling brilliance! shocked How obvious yet I never noticed it before! shocked

Here is my discovery: (I'll use N5872G and N3221V (Thanks John and Andrew!)

Do ya see? confused Look at the ground clearance between the two styles? See? shocked

Well! That just made my decision. We do quite a bit of rough field work and sometimes taller grass and or weeds, sagebrush, etc. We can use all the clearance we can get. Plus, I like the easier accesss for servicing the tires. So, I am purchasing backing plates to install the older set that I am now refinishing! smile (Thanks Matthew and Bengie! grin )

I am now in the market for a set of 1971-1973 wheel pants brackets. PN's 0441201-5 and -6.

Does anybody here need a set of 1974 or newer wheel pants brackets?? P/N's 041225-1 and -2.

Bill:

Juliet's look different than ALL of these. But they have the straight line bottoms. Check out 8346J in the classifieds or club photo section.

My partner, Vince, takes Juliet into grass fields all the time and experiences no problems.

But checking and filling the tires is a MAJOR pain in the gludius maximus.

Thanks Reg! shocked

So it's a looking like we don't know everything yet? Nope!! We're still a learn'n! Anyways, I believe that the pants that you have with the straight bottom are for 1966-1968 models. The 1969 and 1970 models arch up around the tires? Now that I do look closer, Mr. Ed's new panties are also flat.............DRAT!! eek

Oh well! we're still keeping em! For now? crazy

I've been out on vacation for most of September and am now just catching up with the forum posts I've missed. smile

Besides, I still haven't delved into nosewheel pants - they don't always change over at the same serial number break-points as the mains!

Well, at least with the nose, styles may change but they will all interchange with which ever model that you have. Unless you have an oversized nose wheel, of course. smile

And now we at least know that from 1966 on up, you can install any pant that you wish. As long as you have the right mounting plates! smile
