Why do I feel sick I've flip-flopped on this decision countless times. But with no luck finding a good used engine, it's time to sell as-is, take a bit of a financial beating, and move on. I do look forward to owning a share of a plane and pursuing an instrument rating. Hope you all will let me hang around the forum and attend to a fly in or two. I know....172s need to be parked out back at 150/152 events. Any comments or suggestions on the eBay ad? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 16,198 Likes: 1186 Member/15,000 posts | | Member/15,000 posts Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 16,198 Likes: 1186 | Eric, Sorry to hear this. I thought for sure you would have found an engine. One question, do you have any reserves on the auction or just High bid wins ? By the way, when looking at the ad I think the price for outside tie downs at KFIT that you put has one too many 0's (not that it matters)

At least the 172 is a Cessna. You won't have to park in the very back. We'll put you in front of Brian.

Yeah, I talked to quite a few people about engines. But I was possibly a little too cautious and wanted to hear one run before buying it. There are engines out there that have 0-SMOH, but that doesn't seem like a good idea. The plane would probably be tough to sell that way. There was one engine that seemed like a good deal until I found a different description of his incident on a pilot's forum. He had told me that the prop was not struck, but that wasn't true. On a different one I was too slow. You snooze, you lose.
Even if I found an engine, I planned to sell it and buy a share of another plane and get the instrument rating. It didn't seem possible to make the plane airworthy for sale without losing more money on it. The increase in value would be less than the investment. And if I were looking for a plane with a new engine, I'd actually prefer to to buy a runout and take care of the overhaul personally.
If the bidding doesn't reach the reserve at $10k, maybe I'll consider installing a 0-SMOH engine and selling it that way. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 3,062 Visit Put-In-Bay!! I was starting to think it might be nice if it didn't sell. Ya know, even before I advertised it for sale, some guy tracked me down and offered me $12K for it as-is. He didn't even want to hear it run or bother with a pre-buy inspection. I declined, thinking it was worth at least $14K and not quite having talked myself into selling. It was his lucky day! Then the crap hit the fan: new alternator, regulator, discovery of illegal prop & low oil pressure, etc. I'll bet he doesn't know how lucky he was. I hope he got a decent plane, that's a dangerous way to buy. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,362 Member/1500+posts | | Member/1500+posts Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,362 | Was he going to pay with a $20,000 check and you could just give him your plane and the change?
