I am interested in buying a 172K I have found. It was sold earlier this year as salvage by an insurance company, when a hangar collapsed and damaged the aircraft's wings and tail surfaces (tornado). The original owner bought the aircraft back from the insurance company just for the engine. The remainder of the aircraft is very reasonably priced for what you get, and is economically and easily repairable with replacement wings and tail (if you happen to be able to do the work yourself). The salvage company reported the aircraft to the FAA as destroyed (for liability issues, I'm sure). My question is, now that the N# is invalid, and the aircraft is listed in the FAA database as destroyed (by s/n & N#), can it ever be registered again? Thanks!
Nevermind! I realized the FAA Registration offices were open and gave them a call! Yes, it can be registered, and can even get back the old N# if it's still available (it is)!
