Is there anybody else that feels that there is something not quite right about this? [barnstormers.com]

What do you see wrong with it?

Nope! I believe the fella who used to own registration 'N1KE' made a killin' off of his.

More capitalistic power to him if he can sell it!

Bengie,

Agree. When Beech came out with a new series of King Air about ten years ago, it bought up a bunch of N numbers from owners to whom they had been issued. My brother had one in the series and was approached about selling his (it included repainting part of the airplane). He thought about it for a while and declined.

Turns out some folks will pay handsomely for a desired N number.

Back in the late '70s the governor of New York had "1NY", except that when it was placed behind the N it looked, on first glance, like "ninny". I wonder if it's still the case.

Best regards,
Rick

Gotta say...I'm not against it, but I had to think about it for a minute.

What's your beef with it Bill?

I have N124H [registry.faa.gov] ("12" for Hung) reserved in case I build an RV-12. I was contacted recently by a builder named Harry asking if I want to give it up. I told him that if I ever get N124HP [registry.faa.gov] , then he can have N124H.

I think that is the way I look at it, Hung. The N-number is provided for us to use. Not to make a profit with. We are not the rightful owners.

Ed Pataky really wanted N999ED. We decided to change our N-number so that then freed N999ED for Ed to use. I never would have even considered making him have to purchase it from us.

Web addresses and custom license plates are commonly sold. I had an employer who owned a tail number that ended in 7UP. He would not sell it however someone crashed the plane and the number then became available so he lost it.

He was trying to get it back when he too was killed in a plane crash a year later.
