I'm looking for a Carb Air Box for my Continental O-200A. Does anyone have a line on a rebuilt and what would be a fair price?

In addition, does anyone know what a rebuilt carb goes for (O-200) or the kit to rebuild one? Thanks in advance.

New air boxes are rediculous in price, US$1,600-$1,700 as I recall. I've not seen anyone offer rebuilt boxes lately, although I do see a market for them (I'd expect to pay about $400). The better known suppliers offer a shaft rebuild kit (includes new bushings), on the order of US$75 I think, that can be used by your mechanic to rebuild your old box. Forget carb kits! A complete carb overhaul kit (I wouldn't settle for anything less) is almost as expensive as a rebuilt carb. Overhaul kits run about $475, while you can find rebuilt carbs for about $525, and you still need special tools and procedures to assemble the carb properly. It's been awhile since I priced any of this, so my numbers may be way off!

Thanks Carl. Can you recommend a supplier for the shaft rebuild kit?

This is not a recomendation. Just one source! McFarlane supplies these to several other companies for resale, such as Aircraft Spruce and Chief Aircraft. Contact McFarlane with aircraft serial number before ordering. This particular repair is legal by included STC (in the U.S. only. I don't know about Canada). Cessna MAY offer something similar not requiring STC. I would check, first.

Rock,
I need an new air box also. This last weekend I went to a local FBO that I know of looking for one and ran into a source. There is a company in North Plains Oregon named Usher Industries that makes them in batches for O-200's. I am going to see how much they run and availibility and will get back to you.

Ebay has been a good source of parts for us. Found a air box that is now in use on our 1969 that we just rebuilt. Buyer Beware and make sure you know your part numbers and serial numbers. The nicest find was a P.O.H. for our particular year, and it happen to be in Detroit, near where I work! In an antique store of all things, that listed on Ebay!

That new box is at Usher Enterprises 503-647-0015 @ $175. They make to order and it takes a couple days and will ship for the same price. I will have one by Friday and will put up a photo.

If it's a legal box, that's actually a fair price.

I repaired the air-box on my plane with a kit from McFarlane several years ago. The kit itself cost $50 or so. But, I had to use a torch to remove the butterfly from the old shaft, clean and straighten the box, MIG-weld the new bushings in place, then paint everything when done.

It came out pretty good (my A&P thought so); But for the time and effort, buying the ones above would've been worth it.
