My ELT is at the shop for recertification and it turns out it needs a battery as well. I remember 3 years ago I put in a battery and it was pretty pricey. Well this year they had a hard time finding a battery and when they did they said it was back ordered till late next week and the price was going to be $425.00 plus installation, plus recertification, plus taxes!! I told them to scrap that sucker. There's no way I'm putting that kind of money into a 3 year battery.

So now I need an ELT. I can't afford a 406 right now after this expensive annual so I'm looking for a cheap 121.5. One of our members in Quebec, Fred Arpin, said, he would donate his old one to me but when he checked it out, it wasn't working.

The only new one I've seen is the AK450 at ACS. It takes D cell batteries. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? The avionics shop said he had issues with a unit that held regular batteries. But then he wasn't really considering cost as a factor. Thats easy to do when you only have to present the bill not pay it.

I have a spare one in the hangar. I'll get back with you this evening on its make & model. I recently bought it from a club member who said it was working when he removed it.

Bruce,

What was the make and model of the ELT you're scrapping?

I have the ACK E-01s in my 150s. Eventually, I will upgrade to the E-04. You do have to buy Duracell batteries, as they're the only manufacturer of D cells that puts date codes on them. That's the only issue I know of with using "regular" batteries.... well, that and not having to pay an exorbitant price for a custom battery. I could see why that might be an issue for an avionics shop.

I sold off a spare Narco ELT with mounting tray on eBay a couple of weeks ago. Got $75 for it. Think I've got another one around somewhere I also need to get rid of.

I just purchased an AK-450 from Aircraft Spruce for $179 + shipping.

They're a very nice, dependable unit with remote switch, mic jack, portable and fixed antennas...everything you need for installation. Not sure it this is the only 121.5 unit you can still buy new or not but it's the only one I could find available.
