A new guy here!

I'm currently living in Seoul, South Korea, but I am moving to Atlanta, GA in a few weeks time.

I'm looking to buy a C150 as soon as I get back to the US. I was hoping maybe this forum could find me a lead on one.

Here are my specs;

1969->, so with the "late" style instrument panel.
Marginal IFR, I want dual NAV, 1 VOR 1 VOR/LOC/GS. GPS would be a daydream. I want to get my IR done in it, so hoping it would have the required equipment ready.
Low to mid-time engine (unless reflected on the price). This is very flexible, I'd rather have a higher time engine that has been flown regularly rather than an OH from 1978 and 300 hours.
No need for fresh int/paint, as long as my wife won't get scared (and she won't easily).

My budget is around 20k. No financing hurdles to jump through.

If it happens to be close to GA, that's great. But secretly I am hoping for something out of Oregon or Maine, just so I could fly it home...

If you have any leads, pls let me know!

Hi Mikko, welcome to the forum!

I actually do know of a 1968 Cessna 150J model for sale. It's IFR-equipped, has dual comm's, and is just a beautiful plane inside and out. The owner's Dad is an A&P and he has maintained the plane, it has NDH and full logs.

The only catch is the engine hours are about 1650 SMOH, and it's flown every few months.

When I was looking at it, he offered it to me for $20k.

I've got some pictures of it if you'd be interested, it's out here in TX. He's not actively advertising the plane, but I can pass on his info.

Welcome to the forum, Mikko. How about the 1970 that Tyler Scott is selling? It's in Georgia.

Hey Mikko! Welcome to the 150-152 forum!. As a 1969 J model owner, I say, go with the J!!!. In truth, 1969 or later models should be fine for IR training if you want the standard 6-pack of instruments in their standard locations. I'm half done with my instrument training in mine. It has a Bendix King KNS80 which is a VOR/LOC/GS/DME with all in one box, with the rock-solid KI206 indicator and two separate comms. Don't over look that setup as a possibility as well!

When I was shopping for my airplane 2 years ago, I wanted full logs, minimal corrosion, NDH and low time on an engine over-haul for under 25K. I found all that after looking for months. Then for instrument training I started lessons 6 months ago in a rental C172, while having the KNS80 installed in mine. Having a navigation radio installed was quite expensive.

I know the 1969 J-models are what you would expect regarding flight instrument placement. The airplane Alex mentioned above sounds good! If it is a 1968, though, (I thought J-models were 1969), it might have an earlier variation on flight-instrument placement. Be sure to have him send you pictures.

Welcome, Mikko!

I have a 1968 C-150. The 1968 is an H model, as you probably already know. As Geoff said, my instrument placement is not the standard six pack. Actually, I was not aware the 1969 model had the six pack arrangement, which I think is better for IFR training/flying. I had a C-172G prior to the 150 and it had the standard arrangement. It made things a little easier.

Good luck in your search. Even if you don't find one listed here, you might be able to get one of the guys here to take a quick look at one if you find one that looks interesting. We have people living all over the country, even in Alaska.

Wow, thanks very much for the warm welcome and all the messages/ideas!

So yes, the J model-> is what I'm looking for. I understand these came out 1969/1970? H model still has the older style cluster which I'm not interested of.

@Alex: I'd love to see some pictures if you have any. I feel at least on paper 20k for almost a "runout" engine is on the higher side, but if it has a decent panel and good P/I, it might be something to consider.

@Hung: Tyler's plane looks good, and the location would be great. Just that it's out of annual, and is missing G/S and second NAV/COMM. I'm unsure how much a second KX155 w/ GS and a KI206 or similar indicator would cost to install, would have to ask around for that. I'm not sure how flexible he would be with the price, and I don't want to make offers before I'm in the country and ready to buy.

@Vortac180: I've used a KNS80 and it is indeed a nice piece of kit. I'd love to hear your experiences in installing that setup, especially about the costs. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to throw out a ballpark number in public here.

Hi Mikko! There is a current thread about my KNS80 installation at this link:

http://www.cessna150152.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=499745#Post499745

As far as the cost: Well, I didn't really tally it up. I just keep writing checks. The KNS80 cost me $1200, and took a couple tries to find a good one. The KI206 cost $1200. The DME antenna was maybe $200. I added another COMM and audiopanel $3000. Comm antenna $200. Labor at 80/hour. I'd say at least $8000 total for the avionics stack, reusing my original KLX 135 GPS/Comm.

So my cost of ownership for the 1969 J model for IFR training in my first two years: 25K purchase price, 3K post purchase squawks, seats recovered 1K, avionics stack for IFR 8K, gyro rebuilds 1K. Multiple other repairs during and between annuals. Hanger rent 180/month. Hull and liability insurance 600/year. Kansas does not have luxury tax on aircraft, but you might. You can add it up yourself. Airplane ownership is not for the faint of heart. But it adds immeasurable enjoyment and richness to life, so it is worth it. You could save cost by doing some repairs yourself if your mechanic is willing to supervise you and sign off on your work.

All that sounds pretty much what I imagined it would be (and does show well that you should always buy the aircraft after someone else has upgraded it to modern standards!)

I wish I could find a hangar for 180/mo! I've sent out a few feelers in the Atlanta area, and I've pretty much received a polite "heh heh heh" back (as in - you want to hangar a C150? In Atlanta...???)

Sounds like if I find a plane with a single NAV/COMM, I can add the second one for GS(w/audiopanel)(using reasonable yellow tagged second hand parts) for not far off 5k. Thats roughly the ballpark I had in mind.

This sort of budget would be fine by me, and I would have reasonable amount of oh sh*t cash in hand for those oh sh*t moments.

Back to the search then! Still would appreciate any pics/leads/hints/tips from y'all!

Mikko,

Sorry for the delay on the photos! I've included some below for ya. The high-time engine was a deal-breaker for myself, personally, but I will tell you that the owner is an A&P, and a perfectionist A&P at that. He's a good friend of mine and my guess would be that engine is in pretty dang good shape.

It's a beautiful plane, one of the nicest 150s I've seen as far as aesthetics in a long time. 9/10 both interior/exterior.
