You have found one of the best flying clubs anywhere. I too have been looking for quite some time for a 150 to buy. One of my favorite websites is Barnstormers but I looked at all 5 pages today and only found 1 in Ontario. There are a few in Montana but don't know how much a hassle it is moving it to Canada. Another good website is Planeboard. I really like this site as well....but it doesn't have that many planes. I did find a 150 in Alberta. She looks nice but is not a late model as you requested...here's the link: http://www.planeboard.com/cessna/150/ixx4yaD9You know a lot of people looking to buy or sell a 150 look at the buy sell forum, but you may have better luck posting on Cup of Joe. You could start a "new subject"...the title A New Guy! This should hook you up with a good number of people who have a lot of experience in this area..... My favorite model is the D/E series....in fact about a year ago one of our club members was looking for a 150 in California and I told him about an E I found in San Jose and he bought it! He loves it! Anyway good luck and welcome to the club! Bill

Thank you so much for your reply an the warm welcome. I check Barnstormers, Controller, Tradeaplane, Kijiji and Craigslist on a daily basis! Planeboard is a new one for me so I'll add it to the daily list..... I've just messaged the owner of the plane you mentioned, it does look good and has the virtue of being an even simpler aircraft than the later ones. Good upgrades too. It is the other side of the the big rocks so that might be a challenge for a 150hour newbe😧
As far as importing to Canada it can be tricky if the plane has any form 337 mods, these are not approved and have to be removed😡 I know of somebody who bought a Cherokee and spent as much again getting it legal........
Thanks again, Martin

You will save a lot of money and grief with the info you will get from this club! Our website has details on each model...the changes the good points and bad. Also our club sells an extremely good book on the 150 that I have really enjoyed. The 150 in Alberta has been on planeboard for several months. That maybe a good point as the longer it's for sale usually, the more the seller will be willing to lower the price. When I first joined the club one of our members was selling a beautiful 150E in Rochester, NY near where I grew up. She is a beautiful 150 IFR equipped. The poor pilot who owned her had to sell her for financial reasons...he started at 20K...a reasonable amount and each month got more desperate and dropped it a $1,000. I think it eventually went for around 16K.....actually there are (in the USA unfortunately for you) a lot of 150s for sale in the 15-18K that are good planes and also sometimes ones their owners have poured a lot of money into but will not get it out. Another idea is to see if one of our club members is closer to the 150 in Alberta to check it out for you....the best lowest cost wisest approach is to have a club member check...their only interest being love of the 150 and if no red flags are seen then recommend a PreBuy inspection by a good mechanic hopefully not the same one for the guy selling it.....then you "should" get a good deal....unfortunately ....these planes being 50 years old sometimes expensive surprises can happen But you will minimize the risk. I live in Peoria, Arizona....in fact we have a lot of Canadians that come here in the winter and I was talking to members about a 150D I found in Lenoir, NC. Graeme Smith who lives in Rhode Island, contacted me and said hey I'm going to a flyin at Cleveland, SC and it's nearby Lenoir...I can check that 150 out for you....so I was going on vacation to see my Mom in Asheville 80 miles away and I met him there and we checked out the 150D. He showed me what to look for and I learned a lot. I wasn't ready to buy at that point but it helped me a lot in my search. Actually, a few months ago I found an absolutely beautiful 65E in Arrowwood, Alberta! She photo wise is the prettiest E I have seen. Looks like a great plane, but I was hesitant for the same reason you are about importing an American 150. Anyway I can't remember the link I saw it on but it had a lot of px. I did find this one link that has it but you have to pay for it! I included it here in the links that follow. I am located in Regina, SK, and recently (1.5+ years ago now) went through a search in Canada for my 150. I came across it in http://generalaviation.ca. It was located in High River, AB (just south of Calgary) and made for a fun adventure! You are already familiar with the usual search sites. Kijiji is a good one. COPA has their "for sale" section, but the issue with those ads is they are just like print ads - not clickable. That said, I contacted a few different owners via that site. You must be a member to access their site, or perhaps your local flight club/school will have some print copies lying around to look at. Airports are a good place to look - often there are bulletin boards with ads. I am not familiar with any 150s for sale in my region at the moment but can keep an eye out for you. Good luck! Eric

Thanks for the tips. I'm in touch with a couple of sellers locally here in the lower mainland as well as on Vancouver Island, both aircraft will need work ( which is OK if the price is right!), so am taking a bit of a wait and see attitude to them....have yet to get as far as a pre buy on either of them. Will keep you posted.

When you were looking did you find asking prices were close to VREF, or were they all over the map? I've seen some advertised at $18K with on condition engines, poor paint, interiors etc. But "great little trainer, burn very little oil, new cylinders years ago". I view these as parts aircraft.......
Frustrated

We have several Canadian members, so hopefully some of them will chime in maybe Monday. Everyone may be out flying since it is the weekend.

Martin Hi Martin! No I am no expert at buying 150s....but I have been looking at em for over 2 years and with this club's many friends have learned a lot about buying....I am very thankful I didn't buy years ago as the more knowledge you have when buying the better the deal you will get...the more experience you have you will quickly see what's a good deal...a bad deal and by golly you better jump on this fast or you will lose it... the thing to remember is these aircraft are about 50 years old and somethings just need to be replaced. Basically the lower the airframe and engine time the better off you will be. I have found the vref values are way above what a seller will get. I'm looking at buying a very basic VFR 150 for $15,000 and expecting to be ready to spend several thousand dollars on "surprises". I don't know the market in Canada but do here...there are many 150s for sale in the $15,000-18,000 (Canadian $18,700-22,461) range. One of my friends has a beautiful 150 for sale...it's vref is $31,000 and at first offered it for sale a few thousand below that and it didn't sell...it's now at $24,000 and has been listed several months but has not sold. There are many 150 owners that have invested far more in their 150 than what they paid for it...I have seen some invest as much as $70,000 in them....but they won't get it when they sell them. Good luck Martin and as one of my favorite Canadian sitcom heros, Red Green says "Remember we're pullin' for ya!" Bill
