My cylinder replacement turned into a engine overhaul. Such is life. Machine shop says my crankshaft is cracked at the flange. Looking for good used core, a yellow tagged one or a deal on a new one. Have tried all the ads i could find on barnstormers and haven't turned up anything.


Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.
The only time you have too much fuel on board is when you're on fire.

Been there, done that. I also had a cylinder issue (technically the pistons, but still...) that turned into an overhaul. I did not have crankshaft problems, but the cam and lifters were spalling. Son with 1900+ hours, it was time.

I went through 3 crankshafts in the process, all were fine... it’s a long story, I scored such a good deal on a new one that I ended up putting that in the engine that went on the plane (which wasn’t the engine that came off - again, long story)

The point I am taking forever to make is that they do pop up on barnstormers and eBay occasionally, but it might take awhile, and you have to watch the sites like a hawk. If they are priced right, they sell fast. TCM cranks are notorious for cracking, so used ones are not exactly plentiful.

New ones are available, best place to get one is probably Aircraft Specialties [aircraftspecialties.aero] In Tulsa. Sit down before you click, if you don’t already know, they aren’t cheap.

The other option is look for another core engine with a good crank.

Welcome to the Club, David! Jim's advice convinced me not to even start down that road. On third thought, my engine is running just fine now and there is some benefit in getting the factory overhaul before some problem develops that turns the core into junk. I will have to start thinking hard about this.

I gave up and ordered a new crankshaft as the two used ones i did find were priced at almost new cost. What i am looking for now is a reasonable priced exhaust brace and clamps as a previous mechanic felt that it was un needed weight?
Would also like to find the correct throttle cable bracket and clamp but what i have currently works well. I am just trying to get this bird back to as close to stock as i can. This club has been quite helpful with tips for solving most of my problems but these are what is left. Thanks

Well, when you find out how much those exhaust braces are, hunt down your former mechanic and have it out with him.
Really, your mechanic removes something “ he” feels is unnecessary?
It is YOUR airplane, YOU are always director of maintenance.

You do know the carb heat control clamps to that unnecessary item, don’t you?

That brace is avail from Cessna, p/n 0450340-1

...and the salvage yard and eBay peddlers know that, are are priced accordingly. If you can find a used one not bent.

Maybe track down the mechanic and demand it back, some guys never throw anything away. What if he needed one and conned you out of yours?

I do and it was missing when i bought the aircraft. I have no idea how long it has been missing. I am aware of what cessna thinks a piece of bent tubing is worth and would much rather find the drawing to make my own. If i even had a suspicion as to whom it was who left it off i would be discussing many things with them, mainly weather or not they are capable of even fixing a lawn mower. Words cannot describe my dislike for poor workmanship.

If this is the O-200 exhaust hanger that Brian attached, I have the exhaust brace available. It came off of my O-200 and never went for repair.-- The triangle piece that mounts to the engine is cracked at the hanger weld.-- Certainly repairable.

Edit: just back from the hanger. I must have given it away already.
