I am in need of one original style wing tip in seviceable/useable condition with the metal trim strips for my 150G . I am in the process of annual and one wing tip is fine but the other is self destructing (and missing the metal reinforcing/trim strips, which is why it has broken to pieces) and beyond repair. I would buy a used set of newer style cessna 150 tips if anyone has a set of those they will part with. I am also in the market for a used upper and lower nose bowl(with out cracks) for the same aircraft. Thanks, Jim B.

Hey James,
I dug around and found an old post from Herb Rose. Perhaps you could check one of these boneyards and see if they have the part you need...

From Herb Rose:

I've used the following three bone yards with luck at each of them when looking for hard to find parts:

Roger P. Sells, 610-767-5881

Dodsons, Inc. 785-878-4000

Joe Jenkins, 302-697-7743

I've, personally, used Joe Jenkins and he always seems to scrounge around the yard and find the part I was looking for.

I've got a pair of wing-tips I just pulled off my plane. Faded paint, some stop-drilled cracks, but still intact and serviceable.

(I replaced them with metal tips with lighting mounts that better hold wing-tip strobes.)

They're plain plastic Cessna tips used on all the straight-tails. They will fit your plane, but they do not have the metal stiffener (only found on slant-tails). Their outward appearance might be different, too.

Anyway, if you strike out elsewhere and get desperate, let me know. They're yours for the postage.

All but one stiffener is available from Cessna. Although preformed from Cessna, a good sheet metal man can fabricate a set from sheet aluminum, using a metal brake. I'd offer to make a set, but my brake isn't long enough.

Standard Tip

0423008-4 (Top LH/Lower RH standard tip) STIFFENER (List Price: $ 127.00) Stock available $101.60 (EA)

0423008-5 (Top RH/Lower LH standard tip) STIFFENER (List Price: $ 122.00) Stock Available $97.60 (EA)

Conical (droop) tip

0523565-21 (Top LH/Lower RH conical tip) STIFFENER (List Price: $ 30.10) Stock Available $25.59 (EA)

0523565-22 (Top RH/Lower LH conical tip) STIFFENER Unavailable

The stiffeners are not essential, their use began on the F model. Largely, they cover the edge. They are very thin material and have little or no strength.

Metal tips, while not correct for your year model, are a good choice for durability. What I did to mine was remove the three riveted in tinnerman nutplates and rivet in three #6 machine screw nutplates to mount my strobes on, I have Grimes tip strobes and they required the #6 machine screws due to the design of the lens retainer.

No idea why the stiffners list as different part numbers, they are all the same, the tip rib is symmetrical, the standard tips are reversable, in fact, my Madras super tip instructions do not mention which way you are to install them, thought they might work better turned UP as winglets.

Thanks all for your suggestions , offers, and leads. I'll start by calling the boneyards and go from there. Thanks again, J.B.

Might not work, as the ailerons go all the way out to the tips, and there would be considerable blanking out of the ailerons aand a goodly portion of the wing in a slip due to the rather low aspect ratio. Slip that puppy, and watch that wing drop. Maybe just a bit of an upturned blip might work, but anything like on the bigger iron, well, might see problems.

I'll eventually let you know! I've played with this idea myself (swapping conical wingtips from left to right). In theory, it should work. The wingtips will fit upside down (you will likely need to drill new mounting holes in them) and should help control the normal spillage of air over the top and towards the outside of a wing under load. There should be more air directed over the ailerons, hopefully slightly improving roll rate and low speed affectiveness. As all we did was swap wingtips, there are no other mods needed, it is easily reversed back to stock, and there is no mechanical interference with the existing ailerons. I have a new set of fiberglass wingtips, and I can easily fill any additional holes drilled for the temporary swap.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that somebody has already tried it, and found no advantage to it.

Would probably look a little weird, too!
