Thanks Mike.

I don't think this will come upder preventative maint, but maybe, the tube should be safety wired so it will not come loose. if the case is the safwty wire is broke, the tube will want to unscrew, and will do the same as you described when taking the dip stick out.
Any how, pull your top cowling, maybe your bottom also, and check the tube, maybe unscrew and inspect? I suspect it is just loose and need to be secured and saftied. Good luck.

Borrow another dipstick, and see if it still does it. It is common for people to overtighten these, and eventually the threads on the dipstick become worn. Your dipstick should be snug, but not "torgued" on! The 'o' ring, if in good condition, is all that is needed to secure and seal the dipstick, without over tightening it after it bottoms out.

The dip stick on my 0-320 is aluminum and the filler tube is plastic, his is more than likely the same way. If the top of his filler tube is cracked allowing the stick to "jump the threads" he is gonna have to replace the tube. Which on a Lycoming is a pretty easy job.

Contact a Lycoming parts distributor, I'm sure they sell them. Charles | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 3,062 Visit Put-In-Bay!! Member/2500+posts | Visit Put-In-Bay!! Aviall - P/N 75735 Short Tube - stock at $53.68 75736 Long Tube - stock at $45.94 API - stock at $47.89 stock at $41.37 Then www.cessnaparts.com [ cessnaparts.com] shows $57.47 on the short tube but call for availability and they're showing stock available at $49.64 on the long tube. These part numbers came from my Lycoming parts manual for the L2C. Hope this helps you out.
